Being There |

This is one (if not) his last movie, but I don't think Peter Sellers pulls it off. Shirley MacLaine looks good and has an interesting scene for her part!

Voted the most romantic film of all time by Guardian readers in the UK. Directed by David Lean and starting Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Stanley Holloway is the station master. Written by Noel Coward. Recommended. |

A great film, well filmed, produced, with wonderful performances by Al Pacino, Russell Crowe and Christopher Plummer. How do we let these big companies get away with what they do? Highly Recommended. |

A rather ordinary movie about the early life of one John Lennon... Some good performances, but the singing was pretty dreadful... |
Guru |
All about the guru who was known as the bhagwan. Free love and all that from the 70s, just a couple of good lines. Not worthwhile. oh and he was called Osho before he "left us". |

Not at all a bad movie, rather violent but a number of good performances. Recommended. |

A seriously good film done by an Italian director. Interesting composition for a "love" story involving 3 main chracters. Highly Recommended. |

Gripping story, amazing special effects. Remind me again - why do we eat fish? Well played by George Clooney. Recommended |
A Bedtime Story |
Rather silly film from the 60s with David Niven and Marlon Brando, fun though and interesting to watch again after so many years. |
Seabiscuit |
Heart-warming flick about a horse, based on a true story. Jeff Bridges does well as does Chris Cooper. And William H. Macy does a great job too. Recommended. |
Nothing Personal |
Ingmar Bergmann type film of course about relationships, also with a house. The director fillid-in some of the background including the details of the house in which they filmed for 6 weeks - it belongs to the relatives of Oscar Wilde. OK, would not see again |
Greenberg |
Somewhat strange film, redolent of the 1960s, though the main character harks back to the 80s. Very Californian... Would not see again. |
Edge of Darkness |
Interesting plot, somewhat violent. Big business does it again... |
The Blind Side |
Well acted by Sandra Bullock and the rest, interesting tale. The story of Michael Oher. Her: "I would like to adopt Michael." Her: "Well won't you even talk about it?" Him: "Yes". Her: "Yes to we can adopt or yes to we can talk?" Him: "What's the difference?" |
Precious |
Interesting way of dealing with poverty and how it propogates. Well acted by Gabourey Sidibe as the title character, with Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz. Lee daniels has done a great job too. Recommended. |

Madly in Love |
Bollywood in Zurich, Harmless and entertaining. Recommended. |
Invictus |
Very enjoyable, Morgan Freeman is a delight, and Matt Daemon, (I like him,) is very good, even does a passable ZA accent. Clint is to be congratulated for being able to hold the suspense for 20 minutes of a game of rugby.I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul. Recommended. |

John Frankenheimer thriller from 1998 with masterly performances by Robert De Niro and Jean Reno and a guest appearance by the ice skater Katarina Witt. Partly filmed in Arles, the arena - been there! Recommended. |

Rather interesting John Frankenheimer flick from 1964. On the subject of the US constitution. Excellent performances from Kirk Douglas (yes that one), Burt Lancaster and Fredric March. Recommended. |
The Ghost Writer |
Most enjoyable, adhered to the book too. The Irishman is surprisingly good (Why did I expect him to start singing?) There is an interesting review of Brosnan's performance here. And Ewan plays his part magnificently. Highly Recommended. |
In Good Company |
Harmless from 2004, actually silly. |
A Single Man |
A very good film. I thought there was good attention to detail. Acting superb. Recommended. |
Band of Brothers |
½ |
Wonderful HBO production in 7 parts. The misery seems to go on and on. But after 60 years the "brotherhood" is still there. Seriously good acting and effects - dreadful. My uncle was in Dieppe, the Normandy beaches, Arnhem and one of the concentration camps. (An invention of the British BTW.) Highly Recommended. |
Sherlock Holmes |
Full of special effects but they fit the rest of the film. Moves very quickly, very modern. Leaves something to be desired on the character generation. Some good one-liners. Would not wish to see it again unless I would be in bed with a cold or suchlike. |
Up in the Air |
Entertaining flick, fairly predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. A great "George Bush" moment which I suspect thy inserted simply for the fun of it. If you have ever been superfluous you will see a few home truths. More I shall not say. Recommended. |
A Serious Man |
Entertaining cinema this. Loved the Yiddish at the beginning, the audience seemed baffled as to what it was! Characters vividly presented. Not to be missed. Highly Recommended. |
Der grosse Kater |
Not too bad, Bruno Ganz is usually good, and he was this time. Impressive cast of supporting actors. Didn't really come together as a story. Nice pictures, some emotion. Watch it on TV, otherwise don't bother. |
Cinco dias sin Nora |
Delightful film about what happens after a woman takes leave, how she manages to manipulate the people around her into giving her the send-off she wanted... |
On Education |
Download, Wonderful BBC production - A coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age. Looks like it will be a leader in the BAFTA awards for 2010. Written by Nick Hornby. Very romantic, silly. So well done, better than the book, did I say that? Highly Recommended. |
Sunny Hill |
Interesting study of young people who appear to have given up. Well put together cast, some interesting characters. |

Made for TV BBC - Beautiful film in everyway, based on the novel by Somerset Maugham. Quote: "As if a woman every loved a man for his virtue".

After a brief affair with a charismatic diplomat in Shanghai, the wife is left to reflect on their loveless marriage as her husband works to save the villagers' lives. Highly Recommended. |
