The Singer not the Song |
Produced in 1961, this film is based on the 1953 book of the same title and concerns a discussion of religion between a catholic priest and a gangster. Set in Mexico, it was filmed in Andalucia staring Dirk Bogarde and John Mills.

Tower |
A most moving film about the University of Austin campus shooting on 1-AUG 1966. The film is a mixture of animation, authentic footage and interviews. One heroin was Rita Starpattern. (http://www.austinprop.com/RitaStarpattern/RitaStarPattern.html) |
Requiem for the American Dream |

Chomsky is simply an excellent observer. Because of the US media being owned by rich people he is never covered by the MSM. He should be, I think it might change things. |
Saving Capitalism - For the Many, not the Few |
Robert Reich's film based on his book. The basic premises are that people are not being listened to, and that the political system in the US has been hijacked beginning in 1971. Backed by the US Chamber of Commerce, Louis Powell started the ball rolling with his position paper stating that business should attain political power and use it agressively, without reluctance. he is IMHO right. |
Badlands |
A bit like "Bonnie and Clyde". Not a feel good movie this one. |
20th Century Women |
A strange movie, but set in the past which is possibly why I enjoyed it. Well acted with a somewhat pointless storyline. |
Becoming Jane |
An OK movie about Jane Austin's eraly life - and love lost, well maybe just a dramatisation. Good acting and pretty pictures. |
The Bourne Legacy |
I kept on waiting for Matt Daemon to appear - but just a still photo. An amusing movie, sometimes a bit far-fetched. |
Tulip Fever |
A tale set in the time of the tulip Bubble, some interesting twists and turns. A number of good actors in this flick. |
Get me Roger Stone |
Most troubling. It shows that to some people everything is a game - and the only rule is to win, come what may. It makes my stomach turn. How is this approach so popular?
Quote: "He [Stone] sees morality as a symbol of weakness."

Le Chef - Comme un chef (original title) |
Silly French film about a chef about to loose his ranking and an amateur who knows it all. |
Catch me if you Can |
Great fun with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken based on a true story. Recommended. |
Miss Sloane |
Most enjoyable, if only real life was this way with politics getting reset. A lady lobbyist does what she does best. Recommended. |
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets |
None too bad, I thought it was going to be poor, but some humour, extensive graphics, a bit like a game. Plot OK. |
Everything, Everything |
Oh dear. Still it is probably a teenager flick. Mum deceives her daughter by saying she has an illness which means she can't leave the house. |
Grave of the Fireflies |
My googness what a touching story. In simple terms we humans don't require a great deal to be well-off, yet our world seems to be so divided. Wars being the most terrible aspect. Recommended. |
5 Centimeters per Second |
Touching - young love and desire. Yet we rarely take that path it seems. |
Rocknroller |
Nobody does the underworld like Guy Richie. A cast of stars too. Idris Elba and also Butler - who isn't too bad either. |
Detropia |
And how it has collapsed. Motown has been gutted by globalisation. All very sad for the people who live there and can't move. The jobs have gone to the lower-wage countries. |
The Spirit of '45 |
My how things have changed (and not for the better) since 1945. The people returning from war demanded good health, eductaion, housing and jobs. The Tories began to dismantle the whole shebang with Mrs. T and continue to do so to this day. And the Brits allow them - indeed vote for them - to do so. |
Kubo and the Two Strings |
A strange story but touching. And .... a George Harrison song to end on! |
The Last Word |
A very well-acted film with Shirley McLean and Amanda Seyfried. Recommended. |
Going in Style |
Fun trio decide to rob a bank because the bank has ripped them off. (Really, do banks do that?) |
Ariel |
An Aki Kaurismäki cult film from 1988. Cool Finnish flick with one of those popular American cars. Tazi also has a "Tranny" as I did back in the day. He gets banged up, escapes and becomes a bank robber after marrying. They plan to escape on a ship - the Ariel. |
Harry Brown |
A vigilante movie with Michael Caine. Enjoyable. One wonder how to deal with this level of violence. pertinent to today's situation. |
Perry Mason |
Been watching some of the episodes of the TV Series from the late 1950s, early 1960s. Love the cars, the dialogue and the suits. Even the ladys' dresses. I used to watch this on a Saturday evening with the children of my parents' friends while they were having dinner. Love the tune, Paul and Della as well as Perry. Barbara Hale died just recently at a ripe old age. William Hopper went in 1970 and Raymond Burr in 1993. He was a Canadian citizen and an avid philanthropist. |
I Daniel Blake |
Back in the 1960s there was "Cathy come Home". Which had a significant effect on the population with rules and processes put in place to help women in need. The same should happen with people in the same situation as this film portrays. It probably won't, times are different. |
La La Land |
Not sensational, but pretty good. I feel it expresses hope, though the finale doesn't go there, but ends with each going their seperate ways which I personally find depressing. Could be my age. The acting is really excellent, as is the dancing and music |
Tamara Drewe |
Nice work by Gemma Arterton. From a comic strip of the same name. Based on Hardy's "Far From the Madding Crowd". |
The Tale of the Pricess Kaguya |
It's Ghilbi - of course it's well done. |
Trainspotting |
After all these years the story doesn't improve. I do wonder what the point was actually. |
Silence |
It has been a while since I walked out on a film, but this was simply too much religion - stupid devotion to ideas without value. The filimg is seriously good, well real at least. Yep, they all die, either before or after giving up their "faith". |
Manchester By The Sea |
Not a great story, but some nice pictures of New England where I spent quite some time in my life. |
From Up on Poppy Hill |
Another Ghilbi work but this time with some strange music - I think from Disney |
How to be Single |
Silly set of stories. |
Francis Ha |
Good camera work, but the subject matter (IMHO) leaves a great deal to be desired, just silly people from NY. I met some of them decades ago. |
American Gangster |
Enjoyable. Some people have aged a bit. Thriller with Denzil and Russel. |
The Light between Oceans |
Excellent plot, well played and filmed if a little long. R rated - "Romantic". Recommended. |
Full Steam Ahead |
TV series - most informative, many aspects and a well laid-out story. How I enjoy steam trains. I used to go to school in one, with a few "smut" incidents too. |
When Marnie was There |
Wonderful story of an orphaned child and her freind Marie - who turns out to be.... The simplicity and the story of this movie I find overwhealming. Recommended. |
