A Star is Born |
OK, but not as good as the previous one. Still, the lady can sing and there was a dog! |
Wolkenbruch |
A rather good story about a jewish lad - his coming out, so to speak, set in Zurich |
Der Vorname |
Somewhat similar to Polanski's "Carnage". Entertaining with some excellent German actors |
The Guilty |
A police thriller, one of the generation of New Danish Films. Simple but effective. |
La Famille Bélier |
Sweet little film about a deaf, farming family and their talented daughter. She gets to sing - she can. |
Bohemian Rhapsody |
Enoyable, mostly because of the music of course. The plot is a little thin. |
King of Thieves |
Entertaining, But it looses it's way a bit. The acting is good. |
BlacKkKlansman |
Entertaining, kept me on the edge. Spike Lee has a done a very good job. I really liked the ending. |
Bridge of Spies |
A spielberg film with Tom hanks and Mark Rylance as the main characters, excellent. About the Garry Powers exchange. Recommended. |
As It Is in Heaven |
This is a re-watch about a musician who, following a breakdown, becomes a music teacher in northern Sweden. A strange group of people whith whom he builds a strong commitment for them to perform as a choir. A number of twists and turns until the finale in Salzburg. |
Defence of the Realm |
Really quite a good film about a UK government cover up operation against a journalist. Made in 1986. Based on an accident which actually happened on an American Airbase in the 1950s. |
Leave no Trace |
A strange film about a father and daughter living on public land. |
Hope and Glory |
This is a flick about one person's memory of what it was like in WWII when he was a child. |
No Way Out |
A Washington thriller, a few serious flaws in the plot in my opinion. Will Patton is seriously evil, the rest OK. |
A Civil Action |
A pollution story told through the eyes of the lawyers involved. Based on a true story. I don't like Travolta - based on his views - but he does well, as does (of course) Robert Duvall. |
Mamma Mia - Here we go again |
I don't know all the songs, but they are what makes the film acceptable. That and the location, which sadly isn't Greece. So many women in the audience.....! And, I don't appreciate Cher - that train left a long, long time ago. |
The Bookshop |
Bill Nighy playing himself as usual, but a very convincing Emily Mortimer as the bookshop owner. A well-presented story in a photogenic setting. |
Before I Go to Sleep |
Dramaic about a lady who wakes up every day not remembering her life. Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. No wonder it was good it's a Ridley Scott. |
Gladiator |
Worth a second watch from back then. A number of details came through this time. Basically a good yarn. |
Solo |
Enjoyable. |
The Dish |
Watched this aussie film again. A well-told story. I should have visited Parkes when I was there in 2015, probably too late now. |
Muriel's Wedding |
Another silly Aussie film. Pictures of the CBD in Sydney. |
The Castle |
A silly Aussie film, made me smile though. |
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society |
Very enjoyable. I have no idea why it was badly critiqued. And yes, that was Clovelly. Mostly the West Country - naturally. |
Kiki's Delivery Service |
Another Ghibli - a sweet story. |
The Homesman |
A modern-day Western. Well acted (Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank) and a good plot. |
Isle of Dogs |
A really good film with many references and a mixture of technologies. Also a really good story and delightful colouring. |
The Birdcage |
In spite of Robin Williams, a silly little film about a gay couple. |
Paddington |
A not very endearing mixture of a CGIed bear and a family in London. Mind you Nicole Kidman does a credible "Cruella de Ville". |
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri |
Simply put, this is a classic US movie. Dark, but with humour. Excellent performances all round. Lots of action too. |
Suburbicon |
Classic thriller in a US small town with a number of twists. The Coen Brothers, lovely. Matt does a good job as does Juliette - twice in fact. Body count = 5! |
The Leisure Seeker |
A tale about an elderly couple who decide to take their RV to Florida and "The End". In spite of good acting by Helen Miren and Dounald Sutherland it doesn't really work very well. |
The Post |
Steven Spielberg - I mean. A very good film with seriously good acting. |
Children Who Chase Lost Voices |
Another strange film with a number of classic references such as bad things and the dark, a lost place of humanity and re-incarnation. |
The Girl who leapt through Time |
A strange film which sometimes lost its place. Japan must be very different to what we know and experience. |
The Mayor of Casterbridge |
A series of TV episodes based on a screenplay by Dennis Potter featuring Alan Bates, Anne Stallybrass and Ann Massey. I read this at school and it depressed me back then. |
